After two years of its biodegradable footwear pilot program, German sportswear and footwear manufacturer Puma has released a commercial version of its biodegradable running shoe, the Re:Suede 2.0.
In a trial that ended in late 2023, Puma produced 500 special pairs of its suede sneakers using materials chosen for their biodegradability, such as Zeology-tanned suede. Volunteers wore the Re:Suede sneakers for six months before returning them to Puma so the shoes could be composted.
Now Puma has released 500 pairs of the commercial version of this shoe, Re:Suede 2.0, and from April 22 it will be available in the brand's online store in Europe and on the Zalando Plus marketplace.
Buyers of Re:Suede 2.0 sneakers will be able to return them to the company as the shoes wear out and receive a 20% discount on the purchase of a new pair of this model. Puma will send the worn-out shoes to its partners to go through a specially equipped industrial composting process.
