US threatens to impose 30% tariffs on EU and Mexican goods
Last Saturday, US President Donald Trump sent letters to the European Union (EU) and Mexico threatening to impose 30% tariffs on their goods from August 1.
It comes after weeks of failed negotiations with major US trading partners on a comprehensive trade agreement. Similar letters were sent to 23 other trading partners, including Japan and Brazil, and tariffs of between 20% and 50% were imposed.
"Letters are agreements. Agreements have been made. No agreements need to be made," Trump told reporters at the White House on Monday, while noting that the administration remains open to dialogue.
The EU and Mexico have previously described the tariffs as unfair and destructive, while pledging to continue negotiations on a broader trade deal with the US before the deadline. The EU is preparing to step up its engagement with other countries affected by Trump's trade agenda and has warned of possible retaliation.
