US President Donald Trump announced a trade agreement with India, under which tariffs on Indian goods will be reduced from 50% to 18%. Trump linked this move to India ending purchases of Russian oil and lowering trade barriers.
India has had the world's highest tariffs since late August after Trump raised import duties on Indian goods from 25% to 50% last August.
However, the details of the new agreement are still unknown, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi only confirmed that “products made in India will now be subject to a reduced 18 percent duty,” expressing gratitude for “this wonderful announcement.”
The joint statement will be released within the next 4-5 days as the "first tranche" of a larger bilateral trade agreement.
