Asia accounts for more than half of global footwear consumption

According to data published in the World Footwear Yearbook 2024, recently released by the Portuguese Footwear Association APICCAPS, in 2023, Asia accounted for more than half (54,7%) of the world's footwear consumption. It was followed in the ranking of footwear consumer regions by Europe and North America, with shares of 13,9% and 13,4%, respectively.

Per capita shoe consumption ranges from 1,5 pairs in Africa to 4,6 pairs in North America.

China remains the world's leading consumer of footwear, although its share of the global total has declined to 17,1%. Footwear consumption in the United States has declined markedly, with the United States losing its second position in the ranking of shoe-consuming countries recorded last year and once again swapping places with India.

The European Union, when considered as a single region, represents the third largest footwear consumer market, with footwear consumption in the EU amounting to 2023 million pairs in 1.
