French leather industry 2025: exports down 3%
The French leather industry association, Alliance France Cuir, has published data on the leather industry for 2025. The French leather industry ended 2025 with a trade surplus of €4,9 billion, driven by stable imports of €13,7 billion and a 3% decline in exports to €18,6 billion.
France imports leather and footwear primarily from three countries: Italy, China, and Vietnam. Italy leads the way with €3,55 billion (down 5% compared to 2024), followed by China (up 2%) and Vietnam (up 11%). Vietnam is becoming the "new factory of the world" thanks to free trade agreements and a growing desire to reduce dependence on China.
In 2025, France imported goods (from raw hides to finished products) worth €13,75 billion, the same as in 2024. At the product level, the percentage changes compared to 2024 were: leather and raw hides -7%, tanned hides +3%, footwear +2%, leather goods -4%, gloves +4%, clothing +15%.
French exports amounted to €18,55 billion, down 3% from 2024. France's main buyers in the leather and footwear segment remain China, the United States, and Italy.
