Each season, the Future Snoops trend bureau identifies key product design trends for different product groups. For athletic footwear, the forecast is based, among other things, on the analysis of numerous innovation reports and the results of studies of trends in technology and design, including those of key trendsetting brands. We've selected five trends for this article that, according to Future Snoops experts, will impact the athletic footwear market in the spring/summer 2026 season. These trends will help you prioritize your marketing efforts, highlight the relevance of your current product range, and inject new ideas in shapes, details, and materials for development or testing in your upcoming seasonal collections.

1. Airy Fugue

Weightless, almost transparent materials create a multi-layered structure, providing excellent ventilation and visual lightness. These textures allow the shoes to literally blend into the air, especially in summer urban environments. This trend aligns seamlessly with the On brand's technological philosophy, emphasizing functionality and a sense of weightless movement during both outdoor activities and everyday wear.

2. Biodynamics

New materials that "collaborate" with the body respond to temperature, sweat, and pressure, adapting to the natural biomechanics of the foot. This allows for a new level of comfort and support without sacrificing aesthetics. This also allows for the aesthetic properties and capabilities of these materials, and the broader concept of biodynamics, to be conveyed in design. For example, a youth trend is embracing the aesthetics of boxing and combat sports, with technologies and design that provide the split seconds needed for victory.

Or eye-catching yet comfortable sports clogs. This approach opens up great opportunities for brands already established in the niche of highly functional casual footwear, balancing streetwear with athletic ergonomics, such as Honka. 3. Simplified design

Flexibility, customization, and adaptability are undoubtedly a long-term trend: removable elements, replaceable soles, adjustable fasteners, and interchangeable parts transform shoes into dynamic constructs that adapt to mood, task, and the changing conditions of the human body. Another approach to footwear is to use design to offer a solution for the urban consumer who needs a pair that is perfectly suited to various situations and life events, and that will be appropriate everywhere thanks to its design. This solution is a clearly retro aesthetic trend that will carry us from 2025 to 2026. This trend logically resonates with the strategies of brands whose customers value practical versatility rather than innovation in the name of progress.

4. Expressive lacing

Avant-garde variations of lacing—color, texture, and unconventional geometry—become a means of self-expression, and millennials are especially reminded of the "10 Ways to Tie Your Shoelaces" instructional guides from their youth. The details are thoughtful: the deliberate use of color reflects a sense of joyful simplicity. Shoes become a safe platform for personal expression, and the buyer is given the opportunity to tailor their visual image to their own vision.

5. Familiar motifs

The use of traditional ornamentation and decorative techniques is being integrated into modern footwear as part of a trendy wave of cultural transmission. From embroidery to hand-stitching, as well as textures and prints that evoke or imitate these elements, all of this is being incorporated into the product and its packaging, and the design of such elements reinforces the connection to its roots. When working in this direction, it's important to maintain a balance between modernity and technology, as consumers have high standards. For brands that position themselves in this way, such as Veja (a brand with a "human face"), this is an organic way to deepen their narrative and engage with the consumer.

The spring/summer 2026 trends for the Russian athletic footwear market are more than just aesthetics. They are the language of new technologies, customization, and the aesthetic and intelligent transmission of cultural codes. Careful and accurate integration of these trends into brands' product strategies and product presentation will maintain relevance and build trust with the new generation of consumers.
